Art Deco Delight...

It's not often that I come across a kitchen like this one I photographed for Smith and Smith Cabinet Makers, recently appearing on this magazine cover. Designed by Rob Barclay (over 15,000 designs and counting!) and built by Smith and Smith this exquisitely crafted kitchen features “exotic” walnut veneer cabinetry, with signature art deco curves. The light fittings and cornices were sourced by an art deco dedicated homeowner.

Urban Art

Lump Sculpture Studio invited me along to their display in the back streets of Collingwood as part of Melbourne Indesign recently. They had a couple of new sculptures they wanted me to photograph so we got there early before the crowds arrived. Each sculpture was already installed when I arrived, but with some careful composition and lighting I think the photos turned out well. See for yourself:

Got it covered....

In the spirit of self promotion, I thought I'd bring to your attention that the latest issue of Outdoor Rooms features one of my images on the cover. This residential garden was designed by Steve Taylor from COS Design and built with masterful attention to detail by Sam Collie at Esjay Landscapes.

I've included the cover and some of my favourite images from this shoot.

Jack of all trades...

Many photographers will tell you it's best to concentrate on just one discipline. I've never managed to be that focused and enjoy photographing a variety of subjects (master of none). Recently I've been photographing quite a lot of people for various clients and have included a selection of the images here.

As with my interior work, speedlights are all that I'm using for these portraits. My Godox Wistro AD360 is my go to key light (with a collapsable beauty dish style modifier) and I've just invested in a couple lithium powered Godox V860 speedlights. I can control the output of all the lights from camera with the Godox wireless system, so easy.

Way Out West

Music is another great love (not a player, but a listener) and I was delighted to be asked byPeter Knight to photograph one of Way Out West‘s rehearsals. Once there I was also asked to do a group photo (gulp). I wanted to share a few pics from the shoot as well as from a performance by the band the following evening.

Whilst on the subject, I also recently went to see Crossing Roper Bar play at Bennetts Lane. This was an amazing performance and I was quite happy with a couple of the images from the NEX6 and my new Sony 16-70mm f4 Zeis lens. I’ve posted these here as well.

Crossing Roper Bar is a collaboration between the Australian Art Orchestra (Peter Knight is also the Artistic Director at the Australian  Art Orchestra) and  the Young Wagilak Group from South East Arnhem Land. To quote the AAO’s web site: “An electrifying marriage of the very old with the very new, Crossing Roper Bar is a celebration of country, of ceremony, and of the power of music to build enduring bridges across cultures, time and space”.

Sculpture by Lump

Lump Sculpture recently commissioned me to photograph some of their urban art and sculpture. Their custom art work has often featured in my images for landscape designers and pool builders so it was really nice to be asked to work for them directly. The first subject was a bespoke light pendant that filled a three storey void in a warehouse apartment and involved a lot of running up and down star is trying to balance the ambient light with my flash! The second was two large screens on the exterior of two buildings in a new retail and residential development in Melbourne. I’ve included a selection of my favourite images here:

Merryn Tinkler and the Monash Art Ensemble asked me back again, this time to photograph the rehearsals of the Dave Douglas collaboration. Photographing the rehearsal gives me complete freedom to move around the stage and the musicians. Using high ISO, available light and minimal post production I can capture some nice moments.

Landscape Designs

I have been photographing quite a lot of residential landscaped gardens recently. Below is a selection of images from this work. All feature amazing designs by Steve Taylor from COS Design. The first five images are from landscapes built by Matt Seymour and his team at Apex Landscapes. Matt's attention to detail and quality of construction is some of the best you'll see in Melbourne.

The last four images feature a fully tiled, above ground pool by Serenity Pools, with landscape construction by Tyson from Signature Landscapes.

Spa Anyone?

Image Image Image I recently photographed this courtyard pool for Serenity Pools, a new client. The young boy whose house it was told me excitedly that he had three pools in one - a "big pool", a "shallow pool for kids" and "a round pool" (spa). And you know he's right!

Photographed at dusk to avoid the shadows that would have been cast across the pool from the fence and planting on the Northern boundary. Lit mostly by ambient and the my new Lowel GL-1.
